Ashlee + Daniel Wedding Sneak Peak- Tacoma Wedding Photographer

I have been working on editing this wedding a lot in the past couple of weeks. Between my husband and I we had so many photographs that were tough to narrow down. Even going through these images has been a joy for me- conjuring up some memories of their magic day. My husband has remarked to me several times since then, "I thought those two were really cool!" He is an excellent judge of character so that pretty much sums it up.

Rose + Brenton Engagements- Gig Harbor Wedding Photographer

I am very excited to show everyone pictures from a recent engagement session. Rose is from Gig Harbor where I live and she wanted to have her engagement photos here in the harbor where she grew up. We set out to take these photos on a very sunny day in the harbor. For anyone who lives in Washington they know that everyone flocks outdoors on a sunny day and so the harbor was very crowded! I had a lot of fun shooting with this two and we got plenty of shouts and whistles. It is to be expected because these two were looking good! Congratulations Rose and Brenton!

I had no idea what to expect when I was asked to do this cute family portrait session. It was to take place on the family's land complete with a pond with lily pads, a garden, a beautiful bright red garage and an outhouse. Everything was built by Valerie's grandpa. The whole place was stunning and it was really touching to photograph this new little family on a piece of land cultivated for years by their grandparents. Plus Regan was adorable! This is probably my favorite age to photograph, between 6 and 9 months. I just love how much this little one was smiling and getting so excited to feel the grass on her feet and the breeze that was blowing in.

Genevieve + Kevin Engagement- Seattle Engagement Photographer

As promised, here are Genevieve and Kevin's engagement photographs. As a photographer it's always my duty to try to make a photo shoot fun and get the couple to relax and feel at ease so I can capture more natural photographs. This couple however did not need any of my help. Right from the beginning they were laughing, goofing around and having a great time!

We all met at Gas Works park in Seattle to do this fun engagement session. Both Genevieve and Kevin had great memories of playing in the park as children. They brought along a football to throw in the park and it was a lot of fun to watch these two tackle each other and laugh. I am so stoked to shoot their wedding in September. Their personalities and the love they share is radiating! Congratulations you two!

As soon as they saw the old equipment they used to play on they jumped to it! Did I not tell you these two were so much fun?!

Genevieve + Kevin Engagement Teaser- Seattle Photographer

A couple weeks ago I met up with Genevieve and Kevin at my favorite park in Seattle: Gas Works Park. These two were seriously one of the most fun couples I have ever shot. We all laughed and played around beneath the moody clouds that hung over the city that evening. It was so awesome capturing a couple that was relaxed and not afraid to goof around a bit! Later they both told me that taking photos there was fun because they used to play in that park as children and it had a lot of memories for them. There will be more images to come soon but until then, I leave you with a little teaser.

Thanks again for all the laughs you two. I can not wait to capture your wedding!

Living The Daily Verses- Seattle, Tacoma Portrait Photographer

As the well-known John Lennon quote goes, "Life is what happens while you're busy making other plans," and I am always making plans. I will be the first to admit that sometimes these big plans and goals get all of my focus and I neglect all the little magic things that inspired me to have those goals in the first place. It's like listening to a song with only a chorus and completely skipping all the meaningful verses and beautiful riffs that give the whole song context. The verses are the daily moments in our life and I believe we can live all of them with passion and creativity.

I am lucky to have prime examples of people who apply this passion and creativity in their daily lives. People who see an opportunity to connect and inspire others through things we can all relate to. These are the people who point out something beautiful to those of us who forget to slow down and look. These, my friends, are the people who sing through melodic verses and remind us that everyday is an opportunity.

One of these people is Tricia Martin. Tricia is a food enthusiast, artist and health coach in Portland, OR. Tricia's website: Eating Is Art is a fabulous find for those of us needing to inject a little inspiration into our daily lives. The blog features articles, recipes, advice and local events around a topic we can all relate to: eating.

Murder Mystery Dinner: Seattle Music Teachers Association

A couple of weeks ago I was hired to photograph a Murder Mystery Dinner event for the Seattle Music Teachers Association. The event was aimed to get members associated and to raise funds for a scholarship. The Murder Mystery Dinner theme was 1969 rock stars attending a Beefstock concert. It was awesome to see everyone having so much fun with the theme and of course it is always nice to shoot an event for a good cause.

I would not be the person I am today without many of the individuals who devoted themselves to teaching the arts. Individuals who choose to pursue a life of educating and culturing our society with the arts are some of the bravest and most passionate people I know. I had many music, visual and literary arts teachers growing up who instilled in me the desire to find beauty in all of the elements that surround me. For our children this is a necessity. To instill curiosity, spontaneity, expression and devotion to something that moves you. It also breeds resiliency and these days that is more important than ever before.

Between Authors and Oceans

I stumbled upon this image above in a set "Diary of a book-lover" on jelen's flickr stream and felt I had to share it.

I have been thinking about why I love book stores and libraries so much and the feeling that always comes over me when I'm in them. My sister and brother-in-law are philosophy professors and avid book readers so I grew up skimming the aisles of book stores throughout the cities we traveled when I was younger. In fact I realized that the last couple of cities I visited, I could locate places in the city in location to book stores I went when I was younger. Specifically a few really amazing used book stores in San Diego, CA, San Francisco, CA, Las Vegas, NV and Portland, OR.

There is something about being in those places that brings about a sense of peace and sometimes loneliness. A hint of dust in the air, skimming through the pages, and walking through aisles and aisle of books. Knowing that some of the greatest minds in our history compiled these works and I would desperately like to consume every last page of them.

Sway- In Faded Film

These images are a collection of film images shot in London and are the first rolls of film I took after the brain injury that I suffered over a year ago. I left therapy early to go to London for graduate school and it was simply too soon after the injury. I do not expect anyone who has never suffered a traumatic brain injury to understand but I share this because this is what I do- I understand life in every detailed fragment through art.

These images were shot with a Holga- medium format film. I shot them with slide film and then processed them as negative film which makes very strange, intense colors. They are also all double exposure so there are multiple images on each frame. There is no digital processing- just a lot of emotion during a time that was very confusing for me.

Shortly after returning home these negatives were developed and scanned and.... in the common act of forgetting things (as one does with a brain injury) these negatives got left in the back of our car and day by day the sun bleached out every grain until there was nothing left.

Months later, upon deciding that it was time to collect the particles of my past and to make sense of them (especially fragments of time that I have forgotten) I removed from my car six strips of processed negatives that were almost completely blank. I held each one up to the light and all that was left was a clear plastic strip- a container of memories that time had stripped blank.

Stylish Anniversary Photos- Jake & Amanda- Washington Photographer

Jake, Amanda and I set out for an evening of photos a couple of weeks ago. These two love birds have been married for almost 5 years now but haven't had any professional photos taken since their wedding! We decided since their 5 year anniversary is coming up, now was the best time to get some stylish photos done. These sessions area always awesome because I get a chance to design some cards and wall collections along with the photos- and the cards are always nice to send out around the holidays.

Amanda wanted some woodsy photos so we went up Milcreek canyon in Utah. The sun was cooperating quite well and I was able to capture some of the beautiful sun rays. After we hiked around some we headed over to a classy diner in Utah- Blue Plate Diner. The vintage style was perfect to capture some extra cute shots over dinner!

Seaside Engagements- Holly & Nick- Tacoma Engagement Photographer

Last weekend I shot Holly & Nick's engagements at Point Defiance in Tacoma. We were a little worried when the clouds rolled in but the weather held out and it was fabulous! I am leaving you with a little teaser of what's to come. These two were great to work with- in the midst of planning a wedding and excited for what lies ahead in their life together.

I must say that I am really loving all the new photo shoots in Washington. We have great parks, amazing beaches and hello forest greenery!

Owen's Baby Photos- Flush Mount Album- Seattle Baby Photographer

I'm very excited to post pages from the baby album I have been working on! These are pictures of baby Owen. Owen is the baby of our two friends in Salt Lake City, Stevan and Katie. He is adorable and has such an expressive face. I had to laugh after our photo session- 3 adults doing the silliest things to make a baby smile is always hilarious!

The following are spreads from a 10x10 lay flat flush-mount album. I do both the deluxe thick page flush mount coffee table albums and the photo books for any of my sessions. The albums are great for a lot of things (other than the obvious showing off of awesome photos!) they make great gifts for family and also as a timeless gift for the baby when they are older.

I Am A Film Junkie- Seattle Wedding Photographer

I have been having fun playing around with some old cameras lately and am excited to try a new film development technique- caffenol development. Yep, developing with coffee :)

Here is a recipe I found:
Standard Caffenol Film/Print developer:

Water - 8 oz

Washing Soda - 2 tsp

(Sodium Carbonate)

Instant Coffee Crystals - 4 tsp

High Octane Caffenol Film/Print developer:

Water - 8 oz

Washing Soda - 3 tsp

Instant Coffee Crystals - 6 tsp

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid)- 1 tsp

Or what I've tried:
* 5 tablespoons of Maxwell House Original Roast instant coffee
* 3 tablespoons of Arm & Hammer’s So Clean Super Washing Soda
* 2 Redoxon Vitamin C Effervescent tablets (lemon-flavoured ones)
Use two glasses with 250ml of water in each to dissolve the coffee and the washing soda separately. Once the coffee is dissolved, add the vitamin C tablets. Then mix the washing soda solution in with the coffee and vitamin C mix. Develop for 15 minutes, agitate every 60 seconds, and then stop bath and fix as normal. I've heard of just using tap water for stop bath and then Ilford Rapid Fixer for fixing.

It has very interesting effects for black and white and renders a really cool sepia type tone on color film. Let me know if you try it and what you think!!

I can do these for weddings, engagements, family photos, etc. The close up ones here have a black or white side but you can also have the photo wrapped completely around the canvas. Seattle Tacoma Wedding Expo- Seattle Wedding Photographer

This past weekend we had a booth at the Tacoma Spring Wedding Expo that was hosted by Bridesclub.com. It was in the big Tacoma dome, complete with 150 vendors and a fashion show. This was my first time doing a wedding show so we weren't sure what to expect but it was a really fun weekend! We met so many brides-to-be and couples who sat in our booth and chatted with us. A lot of people really loved our products and everyone was super welcoming since we are fairly new to the area.

We had multiple Gallery Wrap Canvases which everyone seemed to love and some of my new hardbound coffee table albums for people to sit and browse through. We also have a show special- when clients call and book a consultation anytime in the next week they get a free 20x30 canvas with their wedding package!

It has been a very busy week with the move to Washington and trying to get settled in while in the midst of working and getting ready for the upcoming bridal show. I will have a booth at the Tacoma Spring Wedding Expo at the Tacoma Dome. Up until recently, I've pretty much just relied on referrals so I am excited to branch out, meet new brides and start working in our new home of Washington.

And speaking of busy and exciting times, I am very excited to share the bridals I shot for this fabulous couple. They were so much fun to work with and weren't afraid to get a bit muddy out at the Salt Lake. Utah Engagement- Andrew & Melissa

Last week we spent a chilly morning with Andrew and Melissa, who are getting married in March. Despite the cold chill of downtown Salt Lake City, Utah we had a lot of fun and were able to get some stunning photos. Melissa originally approached me and asked me to photograph their engagements. She wanted something unique and photos that really captured the two of them together. They were excited that we also shoot film as well as digital and we got some really fabulous holga shots and double exposures as well as a couple of TTV (through the viewfinder) photos. It was a great time and we are really looking forward to shooting their bridals as well!

I love having a collection of little photo books under the coffee table to share with friends and family when they come over. Even in the digital world where we preserve our precious photographs behind a computer screen- I still love having tangible photographs. I love being able to take Polaroids out and read the little notes or to have friends flip through a book of photo booth images and point and giggle and remember a special day. There is something about holding a photograph- we see richer and more dynamic colors, we look a little longer and we share a little more. One of my goals this year is to publish a book of my Polaroid images and to surround myself with more of the photographs that I love.

So to begin this goal I am offering photo books and albums to clients who would like to have one of their own to slip under their coffee table and pull out when loved ones stop by for a cup of tea. :-)

A reason to celebrate

In art school, especially in competitive schools like the University of London, commercial photography can get looked down on. I used to believe that if I developed a relationship with my camera where it became a tool for "work" and not a creative outlet I would eventually view photography as work for someone else and no longer feel the passion and creativity that I do when I shoot. But thankfully, I have been proven wrong and no matter what the end product is, I love photography.

We live in an age where we are bombarded visually. Everyday we are face to face with hundreds of advertisements, television, billboards, newspapers, magazines... It's no longer enough to take a photograph. There must be something deeper, more meaningful, more expressive and unique in order to stop and be affected. Because we are surrounded by beautiful, engaging imagery every day that is thoughtfully constructed we want so much more from an image. The result is that people will find someone that they connect with to shoot their photographs and they will look longer to find someone that can give them something unique, creative and timeless. I'm thankful that the visual arts and all the tools in which to create them are always changing, always improving and always challenging me. And I'm especially thankful that people want more than just a photograph and will come to me and ask for something different and get excited about the collection of digital, film and vintage cameras that I mix up for them.

I am now approaching the one-year anniversary of when I was in an accident and suffered a traumatic brain injury. And while this, of course, changed my life around completely there are a few good things that have been altered. One of these is realizing that in one life we suffer so much, we witness disappointments, separations and death. And for this we must celebrate life with that much more intensity. We must have birthdays, graduations, reunions, weddings and most of all we must have love. So when I get a chance to help someone celebrate something that makes them happy- I become a tiny fragment of a beautiful milestone in someone's life. I get to help someone have something tangible that remains as beautiful as the memory of that event. So whether I am shooting photographs for a personal project, gallery or for a client, I am excited because it challenges me and always comes from a place of love and passion for the visual arts.

You Spin Me Right 'Round Baby- Meghan & Morgan Engagements

Still getting around to posting a lot of older photo shoots on the new blog but here's one from a while back. Meghan and Morgan approached me about taking some fun engagement photos. We definitely had a lot of fun! We went to a park nearby to take these photos. Morgan volunteered to spin the carousel so I didn't have to jump too much with the camera on the carousel and risk breaking it! :) We had to wait till near sundown to get the perfect lighting and speed while we all spun on the carousel. I think we all got a bit motion sick but we giggled through it and it was worth it. Congratulations you two!

Summer Love- Cambodian-American Wedding

These two lovebirds had a beautiful wedding ceremony set in the very large backyard of the groom's parents house followed by a very large reception. They had family come from, literally, around the world for this Asian-American wedding. The bride and groom combined traditions from their heritage to make this wedding fabulous.

Underwater Series

In alchemy, water is a symbol for the unconscious forces within our psyche. This idea is represented by a pool, where things remain hidden below the surface of the conscious mind. Water is also a common theme in many dream interpretations where water is a symbol of emotional turbulence. Ocean tides are controlled by the moon which is a symbol of intuition and the unconscious. Rivers, on the other hand, can represent a journey; either emotional, physical or spiritual. Water presents an environmental metaphor for the internal waters of the soul: emotion spilling over, unconscious escaping, flooding, leaking, dripping, consuming and drowning. I often use water in my work as a metaphor for uncontained emotion. The underwater series shows a female subject flowing through the water. Many images include a red cloth that flows away from the subject and contrasts the blue of the water that surrounds her. The red cloth is symbolic of emotion escaping, following, and in some instances even engulfing and distorting our view of the subject.
